Your HVAC system probably gets taken for granted, at least until it suddenly stops working. You most likely know that it has something to do with regulating the temperature in your home, but exactly what is HVAC? Fortunately, Current Home is here to help you understand what is in an HVAC system and why it is so important.
What is HVAC?
The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. In addition to heating and cooling your home, your HVAC system filters the air you breathe while you’re inside and controls the amount of humidity in the space. It pulls the fresh air from outside into the system, cleans it, and lets it out in your home where you can enjoy the health benefits it provides.
What Does HVAC Do?
As your HVAC system filters the air and keeps it circulating, it filters out allergens, dust, and dirt before you breathe them in. The process begins with an air intake source used for ventilation. Your home will naturally ventilate a little bit when a door or window is opened, but your HVAC system keeps this happening more frequently. This helps remove odors and carbon dioxide, and replenish oxygen.
What is in an HVAC System?
There are three main components to an HVAC system. As we mentioned earlier, the system includes heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. But what parts and processes are involved with these components?
First, the heating component includes a furnace or boiler. The heat from the furnace or boiler is carried throughout the home using pipes or ducts.
The ventilation component can use forced air or natural airflow. When it is forced, it typically also includes a way to filter and clean the air.
Finally, the air conditioning component removes heat from the interior of the home so that it feels cool and comfortable when outdoor temperatures are high.
Are HVAC and AC the Same Thing?
Air conditioning is often referred to as AC, and sometimes as HVAC. In reality, air conditioning makes up one of the three components of HVAC, so the name is not entirely incorrect. However, while AC may be a component of HVAC, HVAC is not a component of AC. HVAC is the larger system that includes AC as an important piece.
How Do I Take Care of My HVAC?
Your HVAC system requires little attention to operate most of the time. However, if you want it to last as long as possible and reduce the potential for problems, you should follow the manufacturer’s instructions for annual maintenance, or have a professional give it a yearly tune-up.
